Washington College: Your Revolution Starts Here

Welcome!

Welcome to the Psychology Department! Our program fosters the learning of theory through "hands-on" experience. Laboratory exercises enrich your understanding of neuroscience, life-span developmental psychology, statistics, biological psychology, learning, cognition, sensory mechanisms, comparative psychology, psychophysiological investigation, tests and measurements, behavior modification, and experimental social psychology.

Speakers from regional universities supplement the formal program. Annually, easily more than 30 psychology students are co-presenters at regional and national conferences. Sometimes the student is presenting his/her own thesis work; at other times students have volunteered to work on a research project or have been part of a team completing an applied class project. Internships at both residential and outpatient facilities provide you the opportunity to acquire supervised experience in a clinical setting. The faculty are professionally active while being personally involved with the academic life of the student.

Every senior at Washington College is required to complete the Senior Capstone Experience. In psychology, this takes the form of an original research project carried out under the supervision of a faculty member. At the start of the final year, you will choose a thesis advisor and, after a review of the literature and ethics review board approval, conduct an experiment, analyze the data and produce a scientific paper.
